Abstract The breakthrough developments of technologies such as artificial intelligence have driven academic journals into a critical stage of digital and intelligent transformation, which puts forward rigorous upgrading requirements for editors' digital literacy. This paper systematically analyzes the restructuring effect of artificial intelligence on the topic selection and manuscript solicitation, review process, publication and communication of academic journals, clarifies the four core digital competencies that editors need to possess—digital sensitivity, digital innovation, digital compliance, and digital service flexibility—and on this basis, it constructs the upgrading strategies for the continuing education system of academic journal editors. It helps address the disconnection between traditional editors' continuing education and digital-intelligent publishing.
